Pediatric Cardiology Psychological Services

Pediatric psychologists play a critical role in optimizing the physical and psychological well-being of children with complex medical conditions. Cardiovascular disease in children, especially those with congenital heart disease, has been associated with reduced quality of life, cognitive problems, poor school achievement, and social/emotional problems (Goldberg et al, 2011; Karsdorp et al 2007). Additionally, many children describe feeling different from peers, fear around medical needs/interventions, and increased behavioral problems.

Pediatric Psychology services are available on an inpatient basis for all children admitted to the hospital, including those on our cardiac care floors. Services provided include:

  • Brief and targeted evidence-based interventions
  • Addressing developmental and psychological concerns
  • Adjustment to hospitalization and serious or chronic illness
  • Consultation for access to additional resources

Heart Transplant Psychological Services

At Children’s of Alabama, we have a dedicated psychologist who works with our solid organ transplant patients and families. The pediatric psychologist role within the heart transplant program is multifaceted, focusing on assessment, intervention, and support for patients and their families throughout the transplant process. They are an integral member of the multidisciplinary transplant team, collaborating with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other specialists to ensure holistic care. Our psychologist provides a variety of services, including:

  • Assessment of developmental and cognitive strengths/weaknesses, executive functioning skills (e.g., attention, memory, etc.), school achievement, and overall social-emotional functioning
  • Provide interventions to promote adherence
  • Address behavioral and/or mental health concerns
  • Bolster coping skills
  • Address skills to promote health behaviors (e.g., sleep, nutrition, etc.)

For heart transplant patients, pediatric psychology services are available on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Services are also available during transplant clinic visits and procedures as well as via telehealth to meet the needs of patients and families.
