Cardiology Spiritual Care

The mission of Spiritual Care is to provide spiritual support and resources to the patients and families we serve, while also facilitating an environment of care that is uplifting and inclusive. Spiritual Care is integrated into the Family-Centered Care model at Children’s of Alabama’s Cardiology Services. Within the CVICU, CCU, and Heart Transplant Services, clinically trained and certified chaplains care for patients and families by helping them identify and use the spiritual resources that are meaningful to them.
Spirituality describes the ways we find meaning, hope, comfort and inner peace. Many individuals find spirituality through religion. Some find it through music, art or a connection with nature. Others find it within the values and principles they uphold.

Our Chaplains provide:

  • Assessing patient/family beliefs, feelings, values, and spiritual or cultural practices.
  • Providing developmentally and culturally appropriate spiritual care interventions (rituals, sacraments, sacred texts, prayer/meditation, etc.).
  • Sharing clinically relevant cultural and spiritual information with medical team.
  • Facilitating contact with faith community representatives and resources.

How is spirituality related to health?

Some say that the body, mind and spirit are connected. The state of any given one can have an effect on the well-being of the others.

Some research shows that positive beliefs, comfort and strength gained from meditation and prayer can contribute to healing and a sense of well-being. Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness, but it may help you feel more at ease.
