What is the Sunshine School?
The Sunshine School is a hospital-based school program designed to support pediatric patients academically during their hospital stays. We provide teaching, advocacy, and support services by working closely with patients, their families, medical teams, and the patients’ homebased schools. The goal is to support patients in maintaining connection with their peers and teachers while promoting continued academic progress during hospitalization, utilizing hospital school services as a key normalization tool.
What services can the Sunshine School provide?
Collaboration with your child’s homebased school program, including coordination of medical documentation, support for transitioning back to school, initiation of homebound instruction if needed, and advocacy for additional support services.
- Bedside instruction may be provided by certified teachers when your child is medically able to participate.
- The Learning Lounge is open Monday-Friday, 12-3:30, for patients wanting to work in a classroom environment once they are able to leave the unit.
