Antibiograms

Antibiograms are a good source to review trends in antimicrobial resistance for an institution.

  • COA antibiograms include both hospital-acquired and community-acquired bacterial infections as well as candida isolates from non-respiratory sites.

How to read the antibiogram (PDF)

  • Match organism and antibiotic for empiric therapy – number noted is total % isolates that were sensitive in a 12 month period
  • Use antibiogram to determine EMPIRIC choices for infections while you are waiting on sensitivity test to be completed
  • Always tailor therapy to most narrow agent for the organism identified and its sensitivities (nafcillin for MSSA, not Vancomycin; penicillin for enterococcus)

The following antibiograms were obtained via customized reports developed in Sentri 7® by Pharmacy OneSource Antimicrobial Susceptibility Report.

All Locations (Non-urine sources): This antibiogram contains susceptibility results from ALL non-Urine isolated collected from all locations within the health system (excludes all CF sputum and all tracheal cultures). This report includes blood, wound cultures, BAL isolates, and others only excluding those mentioned above.

Inpatient (Hospital) BLOOD/CSF (Sterile Sites): This antibiogram contains susceptibility results from isolates collected on or after hospital day 3 or within 14 days of previous discharge from sterile sites only (Primarily blood and CSF)

Inpatient (Hospital) URINE: This antibiogram contains susceptibility results from isolates collected on or after hospital day 3 or within 14 days of previous discharge from urine isolates only.

Outpatient (Community) BLOOD/CSF (Sterile Sites): This antibiogram contains susceptibility results from isolates collected before hospital day 3 or more than 14 days after previous admission from sterile sites only (Primarily blood and CSF)

Outpatient (Community) URINE: This antibiogram contains susceptibility results from isolates collected before hospital day 3 or more than 14 days after previous admission from urine isolates

Respiratory Isolates (10Q-Pulm): This antibiogram contains susceptibility results from respiratory isolates collected from patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis or other chronic pulmonary disease (trach/vent dependent), that are on 10Q and managed by Pulmonary service (Includes CF Sputum, trach aspirates, BAL samples)

Candida Isolates (All locations; Sterile sites and Urine): This antibiogram contains overall susceptibility results of candida isolates primarily from sterile site and urinary sources within the health system (excludes CF sputum, tracheal and stool cultures). *Contains 24 months of isolates*

Helicobacter pylori Isolates: This antibiogram contains overall susceptibility results for gastric H. pylori isolates
