Nursing Support Services (NSS) is a vital department within Inpatient Nursing Services at Children’s of Alabama. NSS plays a critical role in supporting patient care and nursing staff across the hospital, encompassing several specialized teams that provide expert clinical and operational assistance.

Our Team

The Nursing Support Services department is the backbone of inpatient care at Children’s of Alabama. Our highly skilled Registered Nurses (RNs)—many of whom hold national certifications—exemplify clinical excellence and a deep commitment to pediatric healthcare. Together, they provide critical support that empowers frontline staff and promotes the highest standards of safety, compassion, and patient outcomes.

One Stop Placement

Helps with patient admissions and assigns beds quickly and correctly. This team also includes House Supervisors who work 24/7 to manage hospital operations and support clinical staff on all shifts. 

Vascular Access Team

Experts in placing and caring for special IV lines, like Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) lines, that help deliver medicines and fluids safely.

Specialized Workforce Assistance Team (SWAT)

A highly trained, flexible team that responds to busy or urgent situations by providing extra nursing support where it’s needed most.

Wound Ostomy Team

Provides expert care for patients with wounds, ostomies (surgical openings), or continence issues to help them heal and feel better.

Simon Sedation Team

Provides safe sedation (medicine to help patients relax or sleep) during tests and procedures to keep patients comfortable.
