Our Current Residents

Our 2020-2021 PGY1 Residency Class

Chad Bowman, PharmD is from Madison, Mississippi. He received his BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharm.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. He completed a PGY1 residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, AL and is now completing a second year of residency at Children’s of Alabama. He has completed the teaching and learning certificate program at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy.  Chad’s professional interests include pulmonology, pediatric hospital medicine, and ambulatory care. Chad’s residency project will focus on decreased vancomycin exposure in pediatric patients utilizing an area under the curve (AUC)-based dosing strategy. His medication use evaluation will focus on risk of lactobacillus infections for patients receiving probiotic therapy. His continuing education presentation topic will be pediatric pain and sedation.  Other projects Chad will be involved in include training modules for ECMO, psychiatry, CAR-T cell therapy, and stem cell transplant. In Chad’s free time, he enjoys experiencing Birmingham’s food and brewery scene, running, and spending time with his golden retriever Pete.

Rachel Elston, PharmD is from Birmingham, Alabama. She received her BS in Biomedical Sciences and PharmD from Auburn University. Her professional interests include general pediatrics, ambulatory care, and hematology/oncology. Rachel’s residency project will focus on Micafungin prophylaxis in pediatric patients with acute leukemias and lymphomas. Her medication use evaluation will focus on opioid usage in the hospital. Her continuing education presentation topic will be general inappropriate drugs in pediatrics.  She is participating in the teaching and learning certificate program at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy. Other projects she is completing include training modules for genetics, vaccines, nutrition, and USP 800. In Rachel’s spare time, she enjoys trying new restaurants in Birmingham, watching Auburn play any sport, cooking, and working out. 

Jessica Grunwald, PharmD is from Little Rock, Arkansas. She received her Pharm.D. from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy. Her professional interests include pediatric hospital medicine, emergency medicine, critical care, and ambulatory care. Jessica’s residency project will focus on the safety of intravenous ketorolac use in pediatric patients less than two years of age. Her medication use evaluation will focus on the in-patient use of foscarnet. Her continuing education presentation topic will be a pediatric antimicrobial update.  She is participating in the teaching and learning certificate program at Samford University's McWhorter School of Pharmacy. Other projects Jessica will be involved in include training modules for ADHD, sickle cell disease, seizures, and cardiology. In Jessica’s free time, she enjoys running, exploring Birmingham, and watching sports (Woo Pig!).
