Clinic Schedule
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 12:00-5:00 p.m.

Hypertension Clinic
Hypertension in children can damage the heart, kidneys, eyes and brain and is more common than most people suspect. We provide individualized screening and therapy and use non-pharmacologic (diet and exercise) and pharmacologic (blood pressure medications) depending a child’s medical needs. We have full service laboratory (blood and urine testing), imaging (ultrasound, echocardiography and specialized testing) and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring to diagnose the cause of high blood pressure and manage children with the assistance of nurse educators, nutritionist and exercise specialists.

Clinic Schedule
Tuesday: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Thursday: 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Renal Genetics Clinic
Genetic diseases of the kidneys can result in abnormal organ development, alterations in kidney function or abnormalities of electrolyte balance. These types of diseases can be particularly challenging to manage as the underlying causes are not amenable to therapy. Our multidisciplinary team provides diagnosis as well as nutritional and developmental support, medication and in some cases surgical management of these challenging diseases.

Clinic Schedule
Thursday: 12:00-5:00 p.m.

CAKUT (Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract) Clinic
CAKUT is considered a major cause of renal failure accounting for approximately 40% of cases with end stage kidney disease in children. CAKUT include renal dysplasia, renal hypoplasia, urinary tract obstruction and vesicouretral reflux. Collaboration between Children's of Alabama and the UAB Fetal Diagnosis and Care Center allows us to provide counseling to the parents of fetuses with abnormalities on fetal kidney ultrasounds; we work alongside the high risk obstetrician, pediatric urology, genetics, neonatology and nephrology. After birth we follow the patients in the CAKUT clinic, which operates weekly. We provide multidisciplinary educational, nutritional and social work support to the patients.

Clinic Schedule
Tuesday: 12:00-5:00 p.m.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) Clinic
Acute kidney injury is common in children with renal disease but even more so in children who are born prematurely or are severely ill with infections, heart disease, liver disease, and cancer. After an acute kidney injury, children are at risk for protein in the urine, high blood pressure, and in some cases gradually declining kidney function over the following months and years. The AKI Follow-up Clinic provides screening and treatment for these complications.

Clinic Schedule
 Wednesday: 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

Renal Transplant Clinic
The optimal therapy for most children with irreversible renal failure is renal transplantation. The Pediatric Nephrology Division at UAB has one the of largest pediatric renal transplant programs in the United States. These patients require specialized monitoring and follow up with a multidisciplinary team provided in a dedicated outpatient clinic setting.

Clinic Schedule
Monday & Thursday: 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Fetal Anomaly Clinic
The collaborative effort between Children's of Alabama and the UAB Fetal Diagnosis and Care Center started about three years ago with a project to better study, diagnose and treat congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT). These are the most common abnormalities revealed by routine ultrasound scans of fetuses, and they occur in more than 1 percent of newborns.

The Fetal Anomaly Clinic ensures that newborns receive seamless transition to specialized care and allows families to receive expert medical support in dealing with what can be a devastating medical problem.

Hemodialysis Unit
A child whose kidneys do not work normally may need dialysis to filter waste and extra fluids from the blood. Hemodialysis is done at Children's of Alabama where children come to the dialysis unit three days each week and receive dialysis for three to four hours.

The Children's of Alabama dialysis unit--the only pediatric dialysis unit in the state--provides life-sustaining therapy to the children of Alabama and surrounding states. We provide hemodialysis (HD), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), home hemodialysis (HHD), plasmapheresis and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) teaching and training.

Our physicians and nurses are highly skilled to take care of very young infants, children, and adolescents with kidney failure. In addition, our unit also includes a specially-trained dietician, tutor, social worker, family counselor, child life specialist, and pharmacist. Patients are monitored regularly and monthly. Multi-disciplinary patient reviews are held in accordance with national guidelines.

Peritoneal Dialysis Unit
Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is done at home every day. Most children receive dialysis at night while they sleep. Children on peritoneal dialysis come to the Children's of Alabama Dialysis Unit once a month for a clinic visit. Our nurses have special expertise in peritoneal dialysis; they teach families how to perform PD at home and provide ongoing support during clinic visits and by phone. Moreover, we provide multidisciplinary care from a team of professionals with expertise in the care of children with kidney failure (including pediatric nephrologists, social worker, dietician, tutor, and pharmacist).
