The Gait & Motion Analysis Lab at Children’s of Alabama uses the BTS Smart DX software for gait and motion analysis. Interpretation of gait and motion analysis used for guiding decisions for regarding surgical, therapy and orthotic interventions.
The Gait & Motion Analysis Lab team is led by a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. A team of physical therapists perform the gait analysis, collect data and generate a report. The report is then reviewed by the team for interpretation. Clinical recommendations are made under the leadership of the pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Findings and recommendations are then sent to the referring physician.
A comprehensive gait analysis consists of a clinical evaluation, 3D kinematics, kinetics, and EMG.
Appropriate referrals include children with cerebral palsy, myelomeningocele, other neuromuscular conditions that cause significant impairment to gait, or when a major change in treatment is being considered, for example surgery, therapy, or orthotics.

Those referred for orthotic evaluation do not have to meet all of the above criteria, but do need to have the ability to walk 20 feet multiple times and cooperate with a 2-4 hour test.
