Transplant Team

At Children’s of Alabama, we know that a transplant is a big journey — and you’re never alone. Our expert team works together to provide your child with the best care every step of the way.

Each program has specially trained professionals who collaborate to provide comprehensive care to children undergoing organ transplantation. Each team member has a distinct role to ensure the best possible outcomes for the patient and family ensuring your child receives the best possible treatment and support.

Transplant Surgeon
Your child’s transplant surgeon performs the transplant operation and manages all surgical care during the hospital stay. They work closely with the transplant physician and coordinator to ensure everything goes smoothly before, during, and after surgery.

Transplant Physician
The transplant physician oversees your child’s overall health throughout the transplant process. They closely monitor organ function, manage medications, and address any complications or medical concerns that may arise.

Transplant Coordinator
The transplant coordinator is your family’s main point of contact. This specially trained nurse practitioner guides you through the entire process, coordinating your child’s care, managing medications, and providing support every step of the way.

Transplant Pharmacist
Working closely with the medical and surgical teams, your child’s pharmacist develops a personalized medication plan. They’ll meet with your family to explain each medication and help ensure safe and confident use at home.

Transplant Nurse
The transplant nurse supports both inpatient and outpatient care, working with the coordinators to ensure continuity. Trained in transplant care, they can also help troubleshoot clinical concerns when you're at home.

Discharge Coordinator
This experienced transplant nurse focuses on preparing your family for discharge from the hospital. They provide detailed education and planning so you feel confident and ready to care for your child at home.

Child Life Specialist
Hospital visits can be stressful for children. Our child life specialist helps reduce anxiety and fear through play, education, and emotional support—making medical experiences easier to manage for your child and family.

Infectious Disease Specialist
After a transplant, infection prevention is crucial. Our infectious disease experts help protect your child by reviewing vaccine history, managing infection risks, and developing a customized prevention plan.

Dietitian
Nutrition plays a vital role in healing and long-term health. Our dietitian creates a personalized nutrition plan to support your child before surgery, aid recovery, and promote strength and well-being over time.

Social Worker
Transplant care affects the whole family. Our social worker is here to help you manage emotional challenges, financial concerns, and connect you with community resources and support systems.

Psychologist
Emotional well-being is a key part of your child’s health. Our pediatric psychologist provides ongoing support for children and families, helping you adjust to changes and cope with stress throughout the transplant journey.

Financial Coordinator
Understanding the cost of care can be overwhelming. Your financial coordinator helps estimate costs, work through insurance approvals, and identify financial resources, so you can focus on what matters most—your child.

Spiritual Care Provider / Chaplain
Our chaplain offers compassionate emotional and spiritual support to patients and families of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds—including those who are non-religious—focusing on care for the whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

Transplant Assistant
Often your first point of contact, the transplant assistant helps with appointment scheduling, visit planning, and connecting you to the right members of your care team.
