Information For Patients

Plan Your Visit

  • Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your child’s scheduled time to allow for check in. If you are more than 30 minutes late for the appointment, you may be asked to reschedule. Please call 205-638-7084 if you are running late.
  • After registration, your child will go through the triage process to obtain height, weight, and vital signs. You will also be asked about allergies and any recent or current illness.
  • Infusing medications to patients with acute illness is not advised because it increases the chance your child could have a reaction. If your child has been sick with a fever within the past 24 hours, the appointment will need to be re-scheduled to the next available appointment after your child is well. The Infusion Scheduler can be reached at 205-638-6993 or through our main phone number 205-638-7084 and using option number one.
  • The infusion process includes the placement of an intravenous catheter (IV) with blood draw for lab studies as indicated. With orders, the nurses may use an existing central line. The intravenous catheter is usually discontinued after infusion therapy, unless otherwise needed for further infusions and/or studies. Peripheral IV Instructions and Getting an IV (Video)
  • Throughout the infusion, the staff will monitor your child by observation and vital signs. There is the potential for a reaction to the medicine infusing. Your child’s doctor will review this with you. The Infusion Clinic staff are well trained in what to do during a reaction.
  • The physician may choose to see your child during their infusion and/or order additional studies while your child is present in the facility.
  • Children 16 and under must be accompanied by a legal guardian or a proxy throughout the therapy. Only one visitor is allowed at a time due to space limitations. An adult familiar with your child’s care must be present at all times. If someone other than legal guardian is accompanying the patient, please fill out and bring this form.Infusion Consent Form (PDF)
  • Children over the age of 16 are still encouraged to have someone come with them to the appointment due to the chance of medication reaction or that some medications can cause drowsiness.
