International CF work

Since 2014, the COA/UAB Pediatric CF team has provided training to cystic fibrosis (CF) teams across Latin America. The program focuses on showing how effective multidisciplinary teams operate, how to apply evidence-based care, and how to use quality-improvement methods to strengthen processes and patient outcomes.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has supported UAB through the International Mentor Training Initiative (IMTI), allowing more U.S. teams to be trained as mentors. These mentor teams now work with CF programs in Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, and Jordan.

With continued support from the CFF, the UAB program has grown into the International CF Training Network (ICFTN). The ICFTN’s goal is to improve the quality of care, clinical outcomes, and life expectancy of CF patients in resource-limited regions. The network uses a comprehensive approach that includes structured training, advanced data-management tools, and sustainable practices.

Our progress so far was presented by Dr. Hector Gutierrez, at the 2025 North American CF Conference.
