H.Thomas Smith, MDH. Thomas Smith, MD

Dr. Smith has been a practicing pediatrician in Birmingham for more than 30 years. A Birmingham native, Dr. Smith earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama in 1970, and his medical degree from the UA School of Medicine in 1974. Following medical school he served his residency at Lloyd Noland Hospital. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, going to the Gulf Coast and spending time with his family.


Charlotte Prejean, MDCharlotte Prejean, MD

A native of Atlanta, Dr. Prejean came to Pediatrics West in September of 2001 after completing her residency at Louisiana State University Health Science Center. She received her medical degree from Meharry Medical School, and completed her undergraduate studies at Xavier University. Dr. Prejean is Board-certified.


Abby Allen, MDAbby Allen, MD

Dr. Allen came to Pediatrics West in July 2011 after completing her residency and chief residency at Childrens of Alabama. She received her medical degree from University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Allen is board certified. Dr. Allen enjoys cooking and spending time with her family.


Tracy Brookings, MDTracy Brookings, MD

Dr. Brookings earned her undergraduate degree in biology from Birmingham-Southern college. She has been in private practice for more than 10 years. In her spare time she enjoys going to college football games, traveling and spending time with her husband and two children.


Elizabeth (Liz) Lewis, MDLiz Lewis, MD

Dr. Liz Lewis grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Rhodes College and her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. After medical school, she completed her pediatric residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, and went on to serve as chief resident. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Before joining Pediatrics West, she worked in the After Hours Clinic at Children's South. Dr. Lewis is married to Dr. Paul Lewis, an oral and maxillofacial surgery resident at UAB, and they have one daughter and one son. In her free time, she enjoys jogging, reading, traveling and spending time with her family.


Janet Harris, MDJanet Harris, MD

Dr. Harris has been at Pediatrics West since 2001. She graduated from the University of Alabama and The University of Alabama School Of Medicine. She is board certified in Pediatrics. Dr. Harris enjoys travel, the beach and spending time with her husband and three sons.


MeKeisha R Pickens, MDMeKeisha Pickens, MD

Dr. Pickens grew up in Bessemer, Alabama, where she attended McAdory for primary and secondary school. Dr. Pickens earned her bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She joined Pediatrics West in 2015 after completing residency at Children’s of Alabama. During her leisure time, Dr. Pickens enjoys spending time with her family, attending New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bessemer, reading, traveling, going to college football games, and couponing.


Hugh Cheek, MDHugh Cheek, MD

Dr. Hugh Cheek grew up in Georgia. He earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from The University of Georgia and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his pediatric residency at Children’s of Alabama through the University of Alabama Birmingham. He then served as co-chief resident. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Cheek is married to Morgan Cheek, author and mother. They have two children. His professional interests include: children with disability and community resources for autism, cerebral palsy, etc, as well as routine health care for all ages. His hobbies include spending time with his wife and twin daughters, medical student ministry, ministry in medicine, and outdoors/fishing.


Catherine Cotney, MDCatherine Cotney, MD

Dr. Cotney grew up in Birmingham. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Biology from Samford University, and her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB). She completed her pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO, and served an additional year as chief resident. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Prior to joining Pediatrics West, she was a pediatrician at Children’s South in the After Hours Clinic. Dr. Cotney is married and has two daughters. In addition to caring for children, she enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and baking.
