We are grateful that you are considering becoming a volunteer. You will be joining over 1000 other individuals who volunteer at Children’s of Alabama each year.
Please watch this 5 minute video to learn what volunteering is all about.
As you can see in the video, we put our mission to work every day when we "Put our hearts to work to enhance the services and mission of Children's of Alabama by serving the children, families and visitors with respect, love and compassion."
The Department of Volunteer Services has three main components – Volunteers, Information Desks and Stations (one desk is open 24/7/365) and the Gift Shoppe on Main.
VOLUNTEERING AT CHILDREN'S OF ALABAMA and COVID-19
At this time:
ALL VOLUNTEERING ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN CANCELLED. DO NOT COME TO A CHILDREN'S LOCATION, UNLESS YOU ARE A PATIENT.
THE VOLUNTEER SERVICES TEAM HAS BEEN SENT HOME. IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY OR NEED OF IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE, PLEASE EMAIL SHERRY.SCARBOROUGH@CHILDRENSAL.ORG OR CALL 205-638-9696.
AGAIN, STAY HOME & BE SAFE. WE WILL UPDATE YOU ONCE WE ARE ALLOWED TO RETURN TO WORK.
At this time. we don't expect to onboard any new volunteers before August. Therefore there will be no summer volunteer programs. We are very sorry, but our hospital is continuing its staffing density reduction at this time.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING WITH US AT SOME FUTURE TIME, PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR A POSTING FOR WHEN WE ARE AGAIN ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS.
As always, follow our volunteer mantra - if you think you might be sick for any reason, don't come to our campus. We want to protect you as well as our patients...and us too!
Visit this page often for updates.
You should have a servant’s heart to be a successful volunteer. While every person comes with a reason to volunteer, your primary purpose should be all about serving our patients and families. Volunteering is to provide the extras to patients, families, guests, employees and other volunteers. We like to describe it as “sprinkles on the cupcake.” Also, volunteering is not shadowing or interning, and we do not accept volunteers for court ordered community service. You will be making a minimum commitment for most positions of three hours the same day each week for 16 consecutive weeks – 48 hours of service. Your service and commitment should be the same as you would give to a job or class during the semester. Certainly we hope you will volunteer for a much longer period of time.
We offer volunteer programs for teens, college students and adults. We also have individuals who are a part of special organizations who clown, are Hand In Paw (pet partners) or members of the Junior League. Beyond that, we have group volunteers who sponsor events like Family Fun Night and Parents Night Out. We also have volunteers at the Children’s South location, just off the Acton Road exit of I-459.
Last year we had volunteers providing service all 365 days. The majority of volunteer opportunities are during business hours on weekdays. Nights and weekends offer limited placements. Note that you will be asked to list your top three choices on your application.
