Infectious Diseases

Our service population reflects the overall demographics of the HIV epidemic in Alabama—an over-representation of African-Americans and low-income families with few resources. We expect that the number of youth and women we serve will continue to increase. With that projection, our goal is to make our comprehensive care available to even more women of childbearing age, pregnant women and their families through our partnerships with Ryan White funded clinics, AIDS service organizations, health departments and community advocates.

Our Staff

The Family Clinic conducts clinics each week to serve specific client populations. Medical and research professionals are present or available at each clinic session. In addition to physicians and nurses specializing in pediatrics, adolescent medicine, women's health and HIV/AIDS, our staff includes:

  • Counselors/Psychologists - These professionals help patients and families cope with the issues of living with a chronic disease.
  • Nutritionists are on hand to provide instruction about the nutritional needs of people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Pharmacists—The pharmacist provides instruction about medications and their purpose.
  • A social worker is available to assist

In addition to The Family Center at Children's of Alabama, UAB operates a second clinic in Montgomery. Visits at both sites are included in these statistics.
