The Motility and Functional Bowel Disorders program offers an array of state of the art testing to evaluate and form optimal treatment regimens for children with conditions such as refractory constipation, dysphagia and feeding intolerance. The GI Motility and Functional Bowel Disorders program consists of an interdisciplinary team of physicians and nurses to provide optimal care to patients.
Neurogastroenterology refers to the study of how the nerves between the brain and gut interact with each other to stimulate movement of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to anus. Problems with how the nerves and muscles work together results in various symptoms such as swallowing problems (dysphagia), regurgitation or vomiting, feeding intolerance, constipation and chronic GI pain. Specialized motility testing allows neurogastroenterologists to look at the interactions between the nerves and muscles in the gut. The results of the testing will help neurogastroenterologists decide on better ways to treat problematic symptoms. Treatments are integrative using medication, physical and psychologic therapies to improve brain-gut interactions. The goal of treatment is to allow children to resume activities as well as possible and improve their quality of life.
