Birmingham, Ala. (Nov. 17, 2025) — Children’s of Alabama is thrilled to announce Norfolk Southern’s investment in improving critical care services to children across Alabama. The railway company’s significant contribution of more than $450,000 will directly enhance the hospital’s ability to provide life-saving care to critically ill children and strengthen its medical training capabilities.
“Norfolk Southern is honored to support Children’s of Alabama as they expand their Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and enhance simulation training,” said Mark George, President and CEO of Norfolk Southern. “This gift is inspired by the families and care teams whose stories remind us that behind every hospital bed in this system is a child with dreams, a family with hope, and a team fighting for their future.”
The funds will support the completion of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Children’s, increasing the hospital’s capacity to care for more young patients in need of specialized treatment in response to the growing demand for critical pediatric services in the Southeast. The gift will also provide funding to purchase two high-tech simulation training manikins for medical education at Children’s of Alabama and across the state through the Pediatric Simulation Center and the Children’s of Alabama Community Healthcare Education Simulation Program (COACHES).
“We are grateful to Norfolk Southern for their generous support, which will have a lasting impact on the care we provide to our patients,” said Tom Shufflebarger, President and CEO of Children’s of Alabama.
This generous donation underscores Norfolk Southern’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of children and families in Alabama and across the Southeast. By ensuring that medical teams and families are better equipped to deliver world-class care through training and simulation, this gift will help improve patient outcomes and reinforce the hospital's dedication
