Dr. Gilbert is a Professor of Surgery at UAB in the Division of Orthopaedic surgery and is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is chief of the Orthopedic division at Children’s of Alabama. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and the Scoliosis Research and Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Societies. He has served in leadership positions at Children’s, in the state orthopaedic society, and in national orthopaedic organizations.

Dr. Gilbert’s clinical practice includes the broad range of pediatric orthopaedics. He has also undertaken additional training and travels to develop expertise in complex deformities of the Spine, Hip and Extremities, including limb lengthenings. Commonly treated conditions include scoliosis, hip dysplasia, clubfeet, Perthes, Blount’s, and limb deficiencies.

Dr. Gilbert has many research interests and his publications include a wide range of topics: cell and animal studies related to bone and growth plate development; impact of obesity on children’s musculoskeletal systems; infections; Perthes; treatment of fractures; and scoliosis.
