To help meet the growing needs of Alabama’s children for critical care services, the Special Care Unit (SCU) at Children’s of Alabama recently merged with the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to move into a 50-bed unit on the 12th Floor of the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children.
The Quarterbacking Children’s Health Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has a 50-bed capacity. It is a mixed medical-surgical, neonatal, pediatric and adolescent unit with emphasis on cardiopulmonary, neurological and surgical problems, including, respiratory distress, pneumonia, croup, apnea, asthma, near drowning, acute renal failure, child abuse, complex and refractory seizure disorders, meningitis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, ingestions, diabetes, neurosurgery, trauma, facial reconstructions and scoliosis.
The unit serves as a referral unit for Alabama, eastern Mississippi, western Georgia, south central Tennessee, and the Florida panhandle.
