Inside Pediatrics Podcast

Colin Martin, M.D., FACS, an associate professor in the UAB Division of Pediatric Surgery, has been named the president-elect of the medical staff at Children’s of Alabama.

Martin, also the vice chair of diversity, equity and inclusion at UAB, was elected during the virtual fall medical staff meeting last month. He will serve a two-year term as president-elect before assuming the role of president for two years, beginning in 2024.

Martin will work with current president Jeffrey Blount, M.D., MPH to ensure a seamless transition in leadership.

“I look forward to supporting the needs of the medical staff across the entire hospital,” Martin said. “Ultimately, I hope to champion diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, as well as wellness initiatives, ensuring that medical staff continue to be represented and have access to all of the resources they need.”

Martin joined the UAB Department of Surgery faculty in 2012 after finishing his pediatric surgery fellowship at Vanderbilt University. The Delaware native has an undergraduate degree from Carson Newman College and attended medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in 2008 at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, followed by a surgical residency in general surgery at University of Cincinnati in 2010.

With an active research lab and clinical practice, Martin exemplifies what it means to be a surgeon scientist in the field. In addition to his new role, he will continue to serve as surgical director for the UAB/Children's of Alabama Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, co-director for the Pre-College Research Internship for Students from Minority Backgrounds, and vice chair of diversity, equity and inclusion in the department.
