Sensory Integration

Children with sensory integration or sensory processing disorders have difficulty making sense of their world. Our program provides Occupational Therapy aimed at identifying these problems and developing strategies to help children with any learning, behavioral and communication problems resulting from sensory integration/sensory processing disorders. Children may be involved in our program for several weeks or months. Often children receive a combination of individual and group therapy. 

Parents and other caregivers are taught to carry out appropriate activities at home, school or in the community.

How?

Each child is evaluated to identify needs and determine goals. A comprehensive treatment plan is developed with the family aimed at supporting the child to participate in everyday activities at home, school and the community. Skilled therapists address sensory needs with planned activities integrated through play and engage the child in an environment that accommodates the child’s sensory needs. 

In addition to group or individual treatment in the clinic setting, therapists will work with parents/

caregivers to help:

• Adapt play environments for each child’s sensory needs
• Promote positive interaction for the child during the school day
• Learn ways to improve behavior, communication and learning for the child at home

Who?

The staff: Occupational Therapists who have specialized training in sensory integration disorders as well as years of experience working with children.

The children: Those who can benefit from the program include children who:

Avoid activities such as:

• Eating certain foods
• Making cookies
• Playing in sand or grass
• Wearing certain clothes

Show a lack of environmental awareness by:

• Grinding teeth frequently
• Pressing down hard when coloring or writing
• Running into people or things
• Stepping on another person’s toes

Seek sensory activities such as

• Rough play
• Spinning around and around
• Swinging high

Children/adolescents with the following diagnoses may benefit from sensory integration therapy:

• Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• Autism Spectrum Disorders
• Cerebral Palsy
• Complications of Prematurity
• Developmental Coordination Disorder
• Dyspraxia
• Global Developmental Delay
• Sensory Integration/Sensory Processing Disorders

Cost?

Insurance or Medicaid is billed directly for services. Families are responsible for co-payments, deductibles and any portion of the program not covered by their policy.
