Day Treatment

Day Treatment

Day treatment is an intensive therapy program to help children and teens improve movement and participate in everyday activities. This level of intensity provides the tools and time needed to practice new skills. Therapists problem-solve and teach strategies needed for the child/teen to be more independent in daily tasks in the home, school and community. The program provides at least 2 services per day (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, education, and/or counseling). These services are offered for 2-6 hours each day, 5 days per week for 1-3 weeks at a time, depending on the child’s/teen’s individual needs and progress. Patients are reassessed weekly to determine the need to continue the program or transition back to home or less intensive outpatient therapy.

How?

Each child is evaluated prior to or on the first day of the program. Goals are identified by therapists with the child and family. The child/teen will participate in activities to promote:

  • Balance and mobility
  • Communication
  • Overall health and wellness
  • Recreation/community participation
  • School-related skills
  • Self-care such as feeding, dressing and bathing
  • Social/emotional adjustment

An evaluation will be repeated at the end of the program to show progress and develop a plan for a home program and follow-up.
