Cardiac Catheterization Lab

CV Cath Lab

The pediatric cardiac catheterization lab is a state of the art facility equipped with advanced imaging technology that allows the cardiologists to evaluate and treat congenital and acquired heart disease in a less invasive approach. The environment is designed with children’s needs in mind, emphasizing safety, precision, and comfort. Children’s of Alabama has two dedicated cardiac cath labs with one being a hybrid cath lab in order to allow for combined catheter and surgical procedures. The team consists of cardiac catheterization nurses and technologists specifically trained in pediatrics working alongside the cardiologists. The team collaborates closely with cardiovascular surgeons, intensivists, cardiac anesthesia and other specialists to ensure comprehensive effective care while supporting both the child and family every step of the way.

The staff in this area work in these three roles:

  • Scrub nurse or tech: sterile team member, prepares the sterile field and handles supplies during the procedure
  • Circulating nurse or tech: non-sterile team member. Responsible for establishing and maintaining the sterile field and providing additional supplies during procedure
  • Monitor/documenter: Responsible for recording and documenting in the control room
