Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Katelyn was a happy little girl, she loved running and playing with her siblings until Katelyn started to have severe pains in her joints, and she was very anemic and had no energy. Sometimes she would be in so much pain her mommy would have to help her get dressed and carry her around. Her parents were referred to childrens Hospital of Birmingham, September 11th 2008 was the day that changed the Sassin family's lives, the day Katelyn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Katie is currently undergoing extensive chemotherapy treatments. Katelyn wants to become an animal officer when she grows up and she just may get to do that with the help of the doctors and staff at childrens. What does Children's mean to you, your child and your family? (Max. 2000 characters) : Childrens Hospital of Birmingham means so much to our family, it becomes like a second home. When Katelyn was admitted for two weeks with an infection, everyone was so kind and helpful. We absolutely love the staff and the Childrens harbor has been a blessing as well. They are very family oriented, because cancer just does not affect one family member it affects everybody, The staff was very helpful in educating our other three children about Katelyn’s diagnosis. They make it as fun as possible for children to be in a hospital, and just as comfortable for the family members to stay there. Childrens Hospital of Birmingham is and will forever be a big part of our lives.
