Typical Development

August 17, 2021

Learning Objectives for Typical Development Presentation (Amanda Phillips, PT, DPT, Karen McCormack, OTRL, CHT):

  1. Participants will understand basic infant and early childhood development.
  2. Participants will be aware of factors that affect infant and early childhood development, and appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  3. Participants will understand basic infant and early childhood gross, fine and visual motor development.
  4. Participants will be aware of common factors in infant and early childhood development that could lead to musculoskeletal impairments.
  5. Participants will be able to identify early signs of impairment or dysfunction in the musculoskeletal, fine or visual systems.


Infant Evaluation

Learner Objectives for Infant Evaluation Presentation (Mary Beth Moses, MS, PT, PCS, NTMT-C; Chantel Jno-Finn, PT, DPT):

  1. Participants will identify the components of an infant evaluation.
  2. Participants will select an appropriate pediatric assessment tool to evaluate a child’s motor performance based on purpose of evaluation, setting, diagnosis.
  3. Participants will understand the strengths and weaknesses of commonly used standardized pediatric assessment tools.
  4. Participants will identify typical vs. atypical movement patterns in infants.
  5. Practice administering one standardized tool over video case study.


Early Detection of CP/neurologic issues

Learner Objectives for: Early Detection of Cerebral Palsy and “High-Risk of Cerebral Palsy”: practical knowledge for community therapists (Kristine Plyler, PT, MS; Connie Cushing, PT, DPT, MS):

  1. Participants will be able to explain how “at-risk for CP” or CP diagnosis is determined.
  2. Participants will recognize at least two reasons why Early Detection of CP or high risk for CP is important and beneficial.
  3. Participants will be introduced to some of the neurological exams used in early detection of CP.
  4. Participants will be able to identify ways that test findings might be used in shaping therapeutic treatment and care.
  5. Participants will demonstrate awareness of various ways that early detection of CP tests are used in our community.


Neuroprotective Strategies of CP/neurologic issues

Learner Objectives for: Neuroprotective Strategies Presentation (Lauren Lovett, PT, DPT; Anna Ruth McCalley, MS. OTR/L):

  1. Participants will understand neuroprotection and its importance in medically complex infants.
  2. Participants will be aware of medical issues that affect brain growth in preterm and hospitalized infants.
  3. Participants will be familiar with the seven core measures for Neuroprotective Developmental Care.
  4. Participants will identify ways to implement neuroprotective strategies in clinical practice.

Managing Torticollis

Learner Objectives for: Torticollis/Plagiocephaly presentation (Jill Peacock, PT, MS, Amanda Phillips, PT, DPT) :

  1. Participants will understand common risk factors of torticollis and plagiocephaly.
  2. Participants will the latest guidelines for evaluation and assessment of Torticollis and plagiocephaly. 
  3. To review the latest guidelines for treatment interventions for torticollis and plagiocephaly.
  4. To understand how plagiocephaly and torticollis factor into typical infant development.
  5. To be able to understand basic criteria for helmeting and what families need to know relating to this option.

Sensory/Feeding issues and treatment

Learner Objectives for: Sensory/Feeding issues and treatment (Christy Moran, OTR/L, CNT, Margiean Burks, MS, OTR/L, CNT)

  1. Participants will understand development of oral motor feeding birth to 3 years of age.
  2. Participants will identify 3 oral motor strategies to improve feeding skills.
  3. Participants will identify 3 sensory strategies to approach feeding issues.
  4. Participants will identify 3 behavioral strategies to address feeding aversions.
