LOCAL CANCER HERO INSPIRES WEEKEND OF FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN AT “TEE OFF FORE A CURE” FEBRUARY 24 & 25
Date
06/12/2012
Description

POINT CLEAR (Feb. 9, 2012) - The seventh-annual "Tee Off Fore a Cure" golf tournament will be held at Lakewood Golf Club (1 Grand Blvd., Point Clear) on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The weekend begins with the pre-tournament party on Friday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m. Guests will have the chance to meet former New Orleans Saints football players, listen to live music from Bryant Gilley, enjoy food and wine, and bid on items in a silent auction, including travel across the U.S., jewelry, art and sports memorabilia.

This year's Tee Off weekend also includes a 5-kilometer race and walk. At 8 a.m. Saturday, "Gracie's Run" will get runners/walkers going with a 5K run and 1-mile fun run around the lake at the Colony. Registration is $15 for the run and $10 for the walk.

To register for the pre-party, golf tournament, 5K run or walk, contact Kerrie Benson, Children's Hospital development associate, at 251-610-4969. To register online, visit http://childrensal.kintera.org/teeoff.

Daphne schools are getting involved by purchasing T-shirts to wear to the walk to support of Frances Grace Hirs, 12, a 6th-grader at Fairhope Intermediate School, the event’s mistress of ceremonies. All proceeds will benefit the Alabama Centers for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's of Alabama in Birmingham. Events are held annually to help raise funds to fight childhood cancer and are held in honor of Frances Grace, who has been the inspiration of this event for the past seven years for a simple reason - she is a hero. Frances Grace fought cancer once as a toddler. Two years later, she relapsed again, and today she is a three time cancer survivor. She, along with her parents and the staff at Lakewood are raising money and awareness for the cancer clinic at Children's of Alabama.

That Saturday at 8:30 a.m., celebrity instructor Ron Gring, one of Golf Digest's Top 100 Instructors, will host a free golf clinic before the tournament begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. Fees are $200 per golfer or $800 per team and includes a $50 Lakewood Golf Club or Grand Hotel gift card, lunch and a few more surprises for each player. Registration is $50 and includes entry to the pre-party.

Over the past six years, "Tee Off Fore A Cure" has raised more than $300,000 for cancer research at Children's. Children from Mobile and Baldwin Counties made more than 1,400 visits to Children's in 2010 and 90 percent of all Alabama pediatric cancer patients are treated at Children's.
