Partners Come Together To Spruce Up Birmingham's Parkside District

BIRMINGHAM – More than 100 volunteers from four Birmingham companies spent part of their day Friday preparing planting beds and planting flowers as part of a coordinated landscaping effort along the streets and avenues in Birmingham’s Parkside District near Children’s of Alabama.

The project, called Blooming Birmingham, included about 100 planting beds running 10 city blocks from 5th Avenue South northward to Railroad Park between 16th and 17th streets. The beds included annual and perennial flowers, specifically a red and yellow pansy mix, red tulips and yellow daffodils. The planting beds were prepped by helpers from Children’s of Alabama, Landscape Workshop, Protective Life Corporation and Regions Bank. Experts from the St. Clair County Master Gardeners selected the plantings and led the volunteer groups.

Blooming Birmingham speaks to what this collaboration is all about—bringing partners to work together to improve quality of life and help Birmingham continue to grow into a better place.

“One of our goals when we opened the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children expansion was to create a way for patient families at Children’s to have easy access to Railroad Park,” said Mike Warren, Children’s President and CEO. “Thanks to outstanding partners like Landscape Workshop, Protective and Regions, we’re fortunate to make this goal a reality.  We hope this project encourages more walkability in the Parkside District for years to come.”

In addition to providing volunteer labor, Landscape Workshop, Protective and Regions each made a financial commitment to purchase the plants and materials.

"The work Children's does has impacted our employees and their children, including my children, in an incredibly positive way,” said Landscape Workshop CEO J.T. Price. “Our McKinney Family ownership group and entire Landscape Workshop employee team are proud to be part of making the patient experience better by beautifying the Parkside District near campus."

Other partners who will participate in efforts to “green” the Parkside District include the Birmingham Barons, Smile-A-Mile, Ronald McDonald House, The McKinney Foundation, Hilton Garden Inn Downtown, Home2 Suites By Hilton and the Railroad Park Foundation.

“Protective is proud to invest in a healthier, more connected community by joining other partners to help launch Blooming Birmingham,” said Protective CEO and President Rich Bielen. “Curating a greenway that will connect Children’s to Railroad Park, Blooming Birmingham speaks to what this collaboration is all about, bringing partners to work together to improve quality of life and help Birmingham grow.”

Following the event volunteers gathered at Railroad Park to have lunch and mingle.

“Children’s of Alabama is one of our state’s greatest assets, and Railroad Park is one of Birmingham’s most beautiful green spaces,” said Bill Horton, head of Commercial Banking for Regions. “Blooming Birmingham is a tremendous opportunity to connect two of our city’s most treasured resources. Regions Bank is proud to join in this partnership in our headquarters city. This is a wonderful addition to a vibrant neighborhood.”

The partners expect Blooming Birmingham to become a recurring event with seasonal plantings each spring and fall.
