October, raising more than $270,000 for the ill and injured boys and girls who are patients at Children’s of Alabama. Nearly 300 vendors, customers and employees of Nucor Steel Alabama’s five operations participated in the fifth annual golf tournament that benefits the nonprofit hospital.

Tournament activities included a four-person team scramble, putting challenge and a welcome dinner buffet held at Ross Bridge with live entertainment and both a silent and live auction. The Sunday evening dinner and  live auction, presented by Kinder Morgan, featured Southern-style cuisine and two handmade putters donated by T.P. Mills Co. including a custom frame built by volunteers at Nucor Steel Decatur, that sold for $21,000 each. The live auction was conducted by Nucor Steel EVP, Ladd Hall. The evening also included a “Shot in the Dark” night putting competition.

 Tournament steering committee members were Terry Green of American Buildings Company, James Huff and Kenneth Miller of Nucor Steel Birmingham, Pat Cagle of Vulcraft Alabama, Mike Miller of Nucor Steel Decatur and April Pitts of Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa. The tournament, held at the Robert Trent Jones Trail at Oxmoor Valley, has raised more than $1.1 million since its inception in 2007.

“Nucor is committed as charitable stewards across the country,” said James Huff, Nucor Steel Birmingham Melt Shop Manager.  “Partnering with Children’s of Alabama is a logical and admirable cause.   It is a particularly awe-inspiring experience to see how the Children’s staff cares for our next generation.  We are grateful to Children’s and to all the vendors, suppliers and customers of Nucor that make this charitable event a reality.”
