BIRMINGHAM (Aug. 2, 2011) - Recent Alabama legislation now requires any student and athletic participant suspected of having a concussion in a practice or game to be removed from play not to return until he/she is examined by a licensed physician and receives written clearance from the doctor to return to play.
Children's of Alabama is working with state schools and youth sports programs to make sure parents and coaches are trained to recognize the symptoms of concussion and how to seek proper medical treatment if necessary.
Any athlete with a suspected concussion should seek emergency care immediately. To help provide the necessary, required follow-up for athletes with a confirmed concussion, Children's is offering a weekly Concussion Clinic beginning Aug. 8 at UAB Sports Medicine at Children's of Alabama. Patients may self-refer and make an appointment by calling Sports Medicine at 205-934-1041.
