DOTHAN (Aug. 17, 2015) -- To honor a local girl battling childhood cancer and to raise needed funds for childhood cancer research, the Dothan Martial Arts Academy will host Martial Arts for Children’s of Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 19, noon till 3 p.m., at the Wiregrass Commons Mall Center Court (900 Commons Drive, Dothan 36303.)
The event will highlight the skills of the academy’s martial arts and tae kwon do students. In the weeks prior to the event, students have gathered sponsors who have pledged $10 for each board the student breaks during the demonstration. All proceeds benefit The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s where Libby Claire Rushing of Dothan has received treatment for neuroblastoma, a rare disease in which a solid tumor is formed by special nerve cells called neuroblasts.
Families from the Wiregrass Region made more than 8,100 trips to Children’s last year. In addition, 90 percent of the youngsters in Alabama who are diagnosed with cancer are treated at Children’s.
Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children, offering inpatient and outpatient services throughout central Alabama. It is ranked among the best pediatric medical centers in the nation by US News & World Report. With more than 2 million square feet, Children’s is the third largest pediatric medical facility in the U.S. More information is available at www.childrensal.org.
