BIRMINGHAM (June 21, 2011) - The Amelia Center at Children's of Alabama and the Grief Support Coalition of Greater Birmingham will hold several one-day Bereaved Tornado Survivors Group meetings to provide bereavement support for local families whose loved ones died in the April tornadoes.
One group will target families living in western Jefferson County and will be held Saturday, June 25, 9 - 11 a.m. at Restoration Academy (4600 Carnegie Ave., Fairfield 35064.) A second group will meet Sunday, June 26, 2 - 4 p.m. at University Church of Christ (1200 Tutwiler Dr., Tuscaloosa 35404) to help Tuscaloosa-area survivors.
No fee will be charged, but registration is required. Those interested in attending should register by calling (205) 212-7481.
Clergy, mental health experts and bereavement professionals will be on hand to provide information about the long-term resources available to storm survivors as they move through the grief process. The adults, teens and children attending the meetings will also have the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings of loss with others who have had similar storm-related experiences.
"Now that some time has passed since the storms, many families are struggling with the death of a loved one," said Andy McNiel, executive director of The Amelia Center. "The groups will connect families in similar situations and provide ongoing support into the future."
The support groups are meeting locally in the affected areas to reach those who may have also lost their means of transportation in the storms. Additional groups are planned for Walker and St. Clair Counties, but sessions have not yet been scheduled.
The Amelia Center is a comprehensive grief counseling center that provides individual and family counseling to children and teens who have experienced a death or to adults who have experienced the death of a child. It is a department of Children's of Alabama, the only medical center in the state dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children.
