BIRMINGHAM (Aug. 12, 2014) – Children’s of Alabama is encouraging Alabamians to lace up their running shoes, jump on their bikes or dive into the pool as a first step in the inaugural Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Miracle Marathon Sept. 16 though Oct. 12.
In this virtual marathon, participants are asked to walk, run, bike, swim or engage in any other activity that equals one mile of motion every day at a time and place most convenient for them to accumulate the 26.2 miles of a traditional marathon. On the Day 27, all participants will complete the last 1.2 miles at the same time – 2:27 p.m. – wherever they may be in honor of the kids who are treated every day at Children’s. Participants are also encouraged to raise $10 each day to benefit the patients.
“For anyone who has always wanted to finish a marathon but thought they never could, this event offers a fun way to reach that goal and help the kids at Children’s of Alabama, too,” said Cayleigh Cummings, Coordinator, CMNH Corporate Partnerships and Cause Marketing. “Miracle Marathon is an exciting way to raise funds and awareness for Children’s while encouraging our community to be active and involved. We welcome individuals and organizations as well as schools and fitness groups to join us.”
Registration is available at www.miraclemarathon.org. The $27.20 registration fee includes a pedometer to record distance, a refrigerator magnet to track progress, a car sticker, a marathoner’s kit and more. Registrants may enter the Miracle Marathon individually or create or join a team. Each participant will have his/her own Miracle Marathon webpage to use for fundraising and blogging about the experience. Daily messages filled with inspiring patient stories and other information will help inspire and motivate the online community of marathoners to meet their fitness and fundraising goals. Like all Children's Miracle Network Hospitals programs, dollars raised throughout Miracle Marathon will remain in the community to benefit local kids.
