Three-Part Series for Pediatric Hospital’s Cancer Patients and Families

 

BIRMINGHAM (March 14, 2014) – Growing veggies, eating healthy and living well are the cornerstones of a new initiative being launched by the Hope and Cope Program within The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders (ACCCBD.) This garden-to-table concept – “Grow It, Eat It, Live It” – is sponsored by Walmart and designed to help parents learn how to plan, plant and care for a vegetable and herb garden, prepare healthy, tasty and budget-friendly meals for the whole family.

 On Wednesday, March 19, at 1:30 p.m. the ACCCBD and local restaurateur Chef George McMillan III, owner of Foodbar, will kick off the innovative program with the first part of the series, “Grow: Sowing the Seeds of Flavor,” at Children’s of Alabama (1601 5th Ave. S., Birmingham 35233.)

 Focusing on nutrition, taste and long-term benefits of healthy eating and living, McMillan and cancer experts at Children’s have designed the following interactive program:

 Part 1 – “Grow: Sowing the Seeds of Flavor”

  • McMillan will partner with an area farmer to discuss the process of growing food at home and lay out the beginning framework of the kitchen essentials for cooking at home.

 Part 2 – “Eat: Quick Snack”

  • McMillan will offer ideas for a few quick power snacks using dehydrated fruits and veggies that provide a boost of energy and nutrition.

 Part 3 – “Live: Enjoying Every Day”

  • McMillan will demonstrate how to take herbs and veggies from the garden to everyday eating.

 “We are delighted to offer “Grow It, Eat It, Live It” to our patients and their families,” said Dr. Avi Madan-Swain, director of the Hope and Cope Program at the ACCCBD at Children’s. “By providing caregivers with a strong educational and experiential foundation in health-promoting behaviors, we expect that these skills will be practiced in the home on a daily basis.”

 Through “Grow It, Eat It, Live It” caregivers will receive web-based and experiential training to teach them about vegetable and herb gardening, nutrition, healthy cooking techniques and a healthy lifestyle that includes physical and stress reduction. By participating in the program, caregivers will gain skills they can practice at home following the child’s treatment, leading to improvements in health behaviors of the family as a whole.

“Partnering with The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders is such an honor,” McMillan said. “Teaching family members how to grow their own fruits and vegetables, and how to use the items in their everyday routine will help them receive the nutrients they need while also having fun.”
