GASTROSCHISIS AWARENESS DAY IS JULY 30
Date
07/27/2012
Description

Join Children’s in celebrating Gastroschisis Awareness Day on July 30. Each year, one in every 1,871 infants in the United States is born with gastroschisis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gastroschisis is a congenital birth defect of the abdominal wall. As a result of abdominal muscles not forming correctly, babies affected by the irregularity are born with their intestines outside of their abdomens. It is the most common type of abdominal wall defect. Children’s is one of the nation’s leading providers in caring for babies with the condition. The hospital is also home to the Georgeson Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, which is dedicated to the care of patients diagnosed with complicated pediatric intestinal failure.
