For more than 20 years, Children’s of Alabama care providers have seen Down syndrome patients in a specialty clinic setting. Like many other areas of pediatric healthcare, though, evaluation and treatment methods for these patients have evolved over the years. In particular, the focus of treatment for Down syndrome patients has shifted toward more generalized care for the child as provided by the family physician. Special concerns typical of Down, such as heart, respiratory, intestinal, vision and hearing problems, are referred to and treated by the appropriate sub-specialists here at Children’s.
With this re-direction of care, Children’s ceased offering a Down syndrome clinic effective January 1, 2014. Instead, Children’s will focus its work on providing top-notch subspecialty care while working to improve education and advocacy for these patients within their own communities.
