Assistant Professor

Dr. Emily Smitherman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics’ division of Pediatric Rheumatology. She received her MD from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her Pediatric Residency at Duke University Medical Center and her Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She is board-certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Rheumatology. Her professional memberships include the American College of Rheumatology, Society for Pediatric Research, Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance, and Alabama Society for Rheumatic Disease. She is also actively involved in the Pediatric Rheumatology Care and Outcomes Improvement Network. Dr. Smitherman’s research centers around evaluating and improving outcomes for children with rheumatic diseases, with a focus on health systems, implementation science, and quality improvement. She is currently working to determine best practices in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus and develop interventions to target gaps in care.
