Orthopedics

The Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Children's Hospital is a leading center of excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions of childhood. It is a statewide and regional referral center for congenital, developmental and traumatic disorders for children from birth through adolescence. Our physicians are all fellowship trained Pediatric Orthopedics specialists who are solely devoted to the care of such conditions. Additionally, patient care is coordinated with other fellowship trained pediatric specialists to ensure the best and most up to date care available.

The physicians are full time faculty of the University of Alabama School of Medicine and are involved in the teaching and training of other physicians. The New England Journal of Medicine has published studies that have determined that the most optimal care of patients is provided at private, free standing not-for-profit teaching hospitals such as Children's Hospital.

Our physicians evaluate and treat conditions ranging from the simple to the complex including:

  • Scoliosis and other spinal conditions
  • Hip disorders of childhood
  • Clubfeet and other foot anomalies
  • Congenital and traumatic limb deficiencies
  • Limb lengthening
  • Blount's disease and angular limb abnormalities
  • Upper extremity and hand disorders
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Growth plate injuries
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Brachial plexus palsies
  • Dwarfism

Many conditions are seen in specialty clinics where physical therapists, prosthetists, rehabilitation specialists, orthopaedic technicians and other physicians work with our orthopaedic surgeons to provide multidisciplinary care and increase patient convenience. Specialty clinics include:

  • Amputee Clinic
  • Spasticity Clinic
  • Spina Bifida Clinic
  • Neuromuscular Clinic

Our large volume of patient care has allowed us to develop a high level of specialized expertise. This care is rendered in a child friendly environment catered to the special needs of children.
